Leaks
Find the leak first. Then fix it properly.
A leak that shows up on a ceiling rarely starts there. We trace it back to the source before opening anything unnecessarily.
The problem
Understanding leaking pipes and fixtures
Leaks range from a slow drip at a fixture to a pressurised supply failure inside a wall or floor. Water travels along framing and pipe runs, so the wet spot you can see is often not where the problem is.
If water is actively escaping, closing the nearest shutoff — or the main shutoff — limits the damage while you wait. From there, the goal is an accurate location so the repair opens as little of the building as possible.
Warning signs
What people usually notice first
- Damp or discoloured drywall, especially in a defined ring
- A musty smell in a cabinet, basement or closet
- Warm or cold spots on a floor above heated pipe runs
- Water meter movement with all fixtures closed
- Unexplained increases in water use
- Rust marks, mineral trails or peeling paint near piping

Possible causes
What may be behind it
A list of possibilities, not a conclusion. The cause is confirmed on site.
- 01
Failed fixture seals, cartridges or supply connectors
- 02
Corroded joints in older copper or galvanised runs
- 03
Pinholes caused by water chemistry or velocity
- 04
Loose or over-tightened compression fittings
- 05
Freeze damage in exterior walls, garages or crawl spaces
- 06
Drain and trap seals that have dried, cracked or shifted
On site
What the plumber will inspect
So you know what to expect, and can clear access to the right places before the visit.
- The immediate fixture, trap and supply lines
- Adjacent walls, ceilings and floor cavities where accessible
- The water meter behaviour with fixtures isolated
- Shutoff valves for function and condition
- Pipe supports and any evidence of movement
- Moisture patterns and any secondary damage
Typical process
How the work usually runs
Every property is different, but this is the shape of a standard visit.
- 01
Stabilise
Isolate the affected line so the leak stops while assessment continues.
- 02
Locate
Work back from the visible symptom using accessible openings, meter checks and pressure behaviour.
- 03
Confirm
Verify the source before opening finished surfaces. Guessing costs more than looking.
- 04
Repair or replace the section
Replace the failed length or component with compatible materials and correct supports.
- 05
Pressure test
Restore pressure gradually and watch the repair under load before closing anything.
- 06
Advise on drying and repair
We flag any wet building materials so you can arrange drying or restoration if it is needed.
Cost factors
What changes the price
No figures are published on this demonstration site. These are the variables that make one job different from another.
- How accessible the leak location is
- Whether finished surfaces need to be opened and by how much
- Pipe material, diameter and the transition fittings required
- Length of pipe that should be replaced rather than patched
- Time spent locating a concealed or intermittent leak
- Scheduled visit versus after-hours attendance
Estimates
For planned work, an estimate follows once the scope is understood. For repairs, an on-site assessment is usually needed because the cause is rarely visible from a description.
Ask for the assumptions behind any estimate in writing — what it includes, what it excludes, and what would change it.

Frequently asked
Short answers, without policy claims that have not been supplied by the business.
If water is actively escaping and you can reach the shutoff safely, yes. Our guide to locating the main shutoff walks through it calmly.
Often we can narrow it down considerably using accessible points, meter behaviour and moisture patterns. Some leaks still need a small, deliberate opening to confirm.
Access openings are made carefully. Finishing and restoration are typically arranged separately — we will explain what is involved before we cut.
